All-Area Boys' Track: Robichaud runs away with title

Robichaud's Darrius Phillips, Josh Schumack and Devin Hooper finish 1-2-3 in the 100 meters at the Press & Guide Mark Carpenter Memorial All-Area Boys' Track Meet.

A new champion was crowned Friday night at the Press & Guide Mark Carpenter Memorial All-Area Boys’ Track Meet.

Robichaud broke Dearborn High’s grip on the trophy, winning eight events and finishing atop the standings with 153.25 points. Divine Child was second with 144.75. The Falcons were initially crowned champions of the event, but a scoring mix-up was later corrected to put the Bulldogs on top.

Dearborn was third with 117, followed by host Edsel Ford with 62.75, Crestwood with 16 and Fordson with 15.25.

Robichaud got off to a great start in the field events, winning four gold medals.

Diontaye Land won the shot put with a 45-11.5 effort and was also first in the discus with a throw of 137-2.

Marshall Burns took the long jump with a leap of 10-6.5 and Torin Anderson was third.

Khaliq Spicer won a tie-breaking jump-off with DC’s George Sawaya and was first in the high jump after clearing the bar at 6-3. Burns tied for third in that event.

On the track, Chris Davis grabbed a silver medal in the 110 hurdles and then the Bulldogs really took off with a sweep in the 100 meters. Darrius Phillips was first for the second year in a row with a time of 11.0. Josh Schumack was second and Devin Hooper third.

Davis Burrell, Clifton Dudley, Hooper and Cedric Patterson won the 400 relay in 45.27.

Phillips was first in the 200 meters — once again for the second year in a row — in 22.15 and he teamed with Anderson, Burns and Schumack to win the 1,600 relay in 3:30.08.

Schumack was also second in the 400 and Anderson was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles.

Senior distance man Nick Soter led the Falcons, winning three gold medals on his own and one with the 3,200 relay.

Soter was first in the 1,600 in 4:21.2, the 800 in 1:58.71 and the 3,200 in 9:49 in addition to teaming with Griffin Miller, Matt Mangulabnan and Christian Martain to win the first relay.

Angelo Johnson was first in the 400 in 51.12. Johnson also joined forces with Mangulabnan, Joseph VanBuhler and Martain to place second in the 1,600 relay.

Mangulabnan was third in the 800, while Miller was third in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600.

Frederick Boyd was disqualified in the 110 high hurdles, but rebounded to win the 300 intermediates in a time of 41.53.

Westwood New Tech offers project-based learning

Not all students thrive in the same learning environment, but you can ask any of the students at Westwood New Technology High School in Dearborn Heights and they'll tell you the school's project-based collaborative learning model is as good as it gets.

It's a unique new public high school in the Westwood Community School District in Dearborn Heights. The school principal said it is the direction education is going.  "That all schools will have some form of project-based learning," said principal Shannon Smith.  Students at Westwood New Tech complete real-world projects and presentations together to learn material.  "The projects are compelling and the work is engaging," said Smith.  The result is smarter, goal-oriented, confident business-minded future leaders.
